As athletes dedicated to excellence in this sport, we urge the International Olympic Committee and the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee as well as the ISSF leadership and Athletes Comitte to truly hear the voice of the athletes and to embrace the full complexity of the 50m 3-position rifle event by retaining all three positions – standing, kneeling, and prone – in the final. This being said, we are not opposed to minor changes of the final format, however we ask all three positions are included.
In recent years, discussions around changing traditional sports to adapt to modern audiences have become prevalent. However, it is crucial that we preserve the integrity and historical essence of sports like rifle shooting, which require not only physical precision but also immense mental discipline. By keeping all three positions in the 50m rifle final, we ensure that the competition remains comprehensive and true to its roots.
Each position in the 3-position event tests different skills and diversity to the competition. The standing position tests balance and stability, the kneeling position challenges core strength and flexibility, and the prone position demands refined precision and control. Removing any of these positions would not only simplify the sport but also diminish the value of our athletes’ rigorous training and versatility.
Furthermore, the appeal of incorporating all three positions in the final can captivate audiences around the globe, spotlighting the mental toughness, skill diversity and the mastered ability to quickly and accurately take different positions. When aproached appropriately by the media and commentators, the position changeovers can attract spectators and increase audience interest. In addition to everything mentioned above, sling positions are one one of the key differentiating factors between 10m and 50m rifle shooting.
